What is the Cyber Essential Certification?
This certification is a Government-backed and industry-supported scheme that allows businesses to protect themselves against the growing threat of cyber attacks such as malware and phishing, and provides a clear statement of the basic controls organisations should have in place to protect themselves.
The UK Government provided this certification to create a safer internet space for organisations of all sizes, across all sectors. Developed by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), Cyber Essentials is considered the best first step to a secure network, protecting users from 80% of the most basic cyber security breaches.

Microsoft have announced new benefits for ISVs who want to build and market Modern Workplace apps for Microsoft Viva and MS Teams. Those ISVs that are eligible, will receive access to Microsoft technology, one-on-one consultations, curated training, and marketing resources that will help them reach the 145 million people using and collaborating on MS Teams daily.
Two new tools are now in preview that are intended to make it easier to deliver managed security services and identify opportunities to grow.
Microsoft 365 Lighthouse
Microsoft 365 Lighthouse is a unified portal that assists managed service providers (MSP) partners to easily secure devices, data and users, at no extra costs, for their Microsoft 365 Business Premium customers.
Available in private preview, Project "Orland" is a fresh, new experience in the Partner Centre to help Microsoft Partners grow their cloud business by sharing Microsoft-powered insights about their own customers which will improve account management.

Last week, Microsoft shared a new remote code execution vulnerability in Windows, that has been using the Windows Print Spooler. A remote code execution vulnerability exists when the Windows Print Spooler service improperly performs privileged file operations. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could run arbitrary code with SYSTEM privileges. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights. The vulnerability is actively removed and Microsoft published two workarounds to protect systems from being attacked.
Microsoft have provided two suggestions: to disable the Print Spooler service or to disable inbound remote printing using the Group Policy.
Determine if the Print Spooler service is running
Run the following:
Get-Service -Name Spooler
If the Print Spooler is running or if the service is not set to disabled, select one of the following options to either disable the Print Spooler service, or to Disable inbound remote printing through Group Policy:
Option 1 - Disable the Print Spooler service
If disabling the Print Spooler service is appropriate for your enterprise, use the following PowerShell commands:
Stop-Service -Name Spooler -Force
Set-Service -Name Spooler -StartupType Disabled
Impact of workaround Disabling the Print Spooler service disables the ability to print both locally and remotely.
Option 2 - Disable inbound remote printing through Group Policy
You can also configure the settings via Group Policy as follows:
Computer Configuration / Administrative Templates / Printers
Disable the “Allow Print Spooler to accept client connections:” policy to block remote attacks.
You must restart the Print Spooler service for the group policy to take effect.
Impact of workaround This policy will block the remote attack vector by preventing inbound remote printing operations. The system will no longer function as a print server, but local printing to a directly attached device will still be possible.

Meetings & Webinars:
Microsoft has began to offer live transcription in the Microsoft Teams platform for English (US). This feature allows a written record of the spoken text that happens during a meeting. Each speaker is clearly identified whilst speech is captured automatically in real-time which can be accessed during and after the teams meeting.
Meeting recap is available once a meeting is over in the form of a recording, transcript, attached files and chat. This recap is available in the Details Tab and can be shared with participants of the meeting. People who have joined the meeting late, or missed it can have access to this at any time.
Meet Now in Outlook client for Windows
From the Calendar tab in Outlook for windows, you can now start a Teams meeting instantly by clicking the Meet Now button. For this to work, admins need to set the Allow Private Meet Now policy option to True in their admin console area.
Get a Meet Now meeting link from the Calendar
To share a meeting with others quickly, you can simply copy the Meet Now link from your Calendar before the meeting starts. This is a quick and easy way to paste the link into chat, text and also emails.
New bypass lobby option
With the new Microsoft updates, certain groups of users are able to join meetings directly and bypass meeting lobbies with the new policies. "People in my organisation" and "People in my organisation, trusted organisation and guests." This gives users another level of security and flexibility when using Teams.

Viva Learning is a central hub for learning in Microsoft Teams, with AI that recommends the right content, making learning a natural part of the day. It aggregates content from LinkedIn Learning, Microsoft Learn, and other leading content providers, as well as your own custom content. Easy sharing, assigning, and tracking of course completion.
Viva Topics uses AI to automatically organize company-wide content and expertise into relevant categories, putting knowledge to work. Viva Topics automatically surfaces topic cards as people work in apps like Office, SharePoint, and Teams. When employees click on a card, a topic page appears with documents, videos, and related people.

Welcome to December! We have all been waiting for this update as November has been another month with a lot of great features that will help you get the most out of Microsoft Teams. Let's jump right in!
AI-based noise suppression
The real-time AI noise suppression feature automatically removes unwelcome background noise during your meetings. The AI-based noise suppression analyses your audio feed filtering out the noise and retaining only the speech signal. You can also control how much noise suppression you want, including a high setting to suppress more background noise.
New Together mode scene selection
Together mode reimagines meeting experiences to help participants feel closer together even when you are apart. Microsoft have introduced new Together mode scene selections to transport your team to a variet of settings. Choose a scene to set the tone and create a unique experience for your meeting, whether it be a smaller conference room meeting, or an all-hands meeting held in an outdoor amphitheater.
Polls in Teams Meetings
Polls in Teams meetings is a seamless experience powered by Forms that helps you conduct more engaging and productive meetings. As a meeting organiser or presenter, you can prepare, launch, and evaluate polls before, during, and after meetings, respectively. Your attendees can easily view and respond to the polls in the pop-up bubble or chat pane. To enable this feature as the meeting organiser or presenter, simply add the Forms app as a tab in your Teams meeting. Learn more.
Full screen support in new meetings experience
Full screen mode is back. With full screen mode on Windows the meeting window fills up the whole screen, removing all other screen elements, including the title bar on the top and task bar on the bottom. On Mac OS, full screen mode maximises the meeting window and the title bar is hidden. This helps you to reduce distractions and focus your attention.
Start an instant meeting from your mobile device
You'll now find the familiar Meet Now icon on the calendar tab and in the Teams channel helping you connect with your team instantly. Once you start your meeting, you can use any messaging app on your mobile device to share the invite or add participants directly to the meeting, and anyone in the Teams channel can join without an invite.
Updated layout for meetings on iOS
Microsoft have improved the Teams experience on iOS devices with a new presentation mode, the ability to see more participants, and the ability to see shared content and a spotlighted participant concurrently.
While you're on a call with another person (or a group), you might want to add another expert to participate in the call. Similarly, you may receive an incoming call that makes sense to connect with one you're already on. Call Merge gives end users the capability to merge their Teams VoIP and PSTN active 1-1 calls into another 1-1 call or another group call. You can merge your calls, simply by choosing the "..." (more actions) button from the call controls and select "merge calls".
Survivable Branch Appliance
To support the most critical conversations in the event of an outage, the new Survivable Branch Appliance (SBA) allows you to place and receive PSTN calls even in the event of a WAN outage. This SBA is now available to certified Session Border Controller (SBC) vendors, allowing SBCs to link with the Teams client in the event the client cannot reach the Microsoft Calling network.
Ericsson Session Border Controller certification
Ericsson has completed the Session Border Controller (SBC) certification process, which ensures that their SBC supports Direct Routing for Microsoft Teams, joining the list of certified SBCs. This rigorous certification process includes intense 3rd part testing and validation in production and pre-production Direct Routing environments. Direct Routing permits customers to connect their own carriers and infrastructure with Phone System to enable Teams Calling.
Microsoft Teams displays
Microsoft Teams displays is a new category of all-in-one dedicated Teams devices that features an ambient touchscreen and a hands-free experience powered by Cortana. These devices seamlessly integrate with your PC, providing easy access to Teams chat, meetings, calling, calendar, and files. With natural language, users can ask Cortana to join and present in meetings, dictate replies to a Teams chat, and more.
USB phone by Yealink: MP50
The plug and play format of the newly available MP50 by Yealink offers a new way to experience calling features in Teams, allowing you to connect a phone to your PC and start engaging in full phone functionality instantly. The MP50 provides a cost-effective option, giving you a traditional handset experience with a dedicated Teams button, for quick meeting and calling join, as well as USB and Bluetooth connection for both mobile and PC.
Yealink A20 is an integrated, Android-based Microsoft Teams Room designed for small meeting rooms and huddle spaces. The A20 delivers premium audio and video experiences through a 20-megapixel 133-degree horizontal field of view lens, 8 MEMS microphone array and built-in speaker. With the simple, embedded graphical app studio, it has never been easier to build low code apps for Teams. You can also harness immediate value from built in templates like the Great Ideas or Inspections apps, which can be deployed in one click and customised easily. The new Power Apps app for Teams can be backed by a new relational datastore - Dataverse for Teams.
New Power Automate App for Teams
The new Power Automate app for Teams is now generally available. The new app makes it easier than ever to automate workflows within teams. With the simplified flow designer, you can easily build flows by selecting from a number of templates and simply selecting your options from drop down menus. Also, the home screen of the new app improves your visibility into your flows and let's manage your flows for Teams from there.
Power Virtual Agents (PVA) for Teams
Power Virtual Agents (PVA) for Teams is now generally available. Since announcing the PVA preview at Ignite 2020 users have found chat bots useful as well as easy to create and Microsoft have seen thousands of bots created in the past few weeks. Microsoft are now also providing additional features including native authentication, where bots can be designed to provide information to users based upon their identity. You can now also easily make your bot available to your teammates and have admin approval to make it available for the whole organisation.
Teams apps for meetings now generally available

Support for Single Sign-On (SSO) for Bots
Microsoft has announced that Single Sign-On (SSO) for bots is now available. SSO authentication in Azure Active Directory (Azure AD) minimizes the number of times users need to enter their login credentials by silently refreshing the authentication token. If users agree to use your app, they will not have to consent again on another device and will be signed in automatically.
Device management automatic alerting in Teams Admin Center
Device management automatic alerting provides more efficiency in identifying devices issues by triggering notifications that can be turned into an immediate correction action.
Insights across classes and spotlight student activity
New capabilities in Insights helps you as an educator to understand engagement and progress of students over time and across your classes. Now, educators can see high-level trends across classes, like inactive students, active students per day, missed online classes and missed assignments.And within a class, new spotlight cards show trending student behaviors an educator may want to take action on.
Shift schedule assistance
Shifts schedule assistance will alert managers if conflicts occur anywhere in the schedule and they will receive conflict warnings when approving schedule change requests. This alerting saves managers time, makes shift scheduling more efficient and reduces inaccuracies that lead to employees not turning up for their shift.

This month, Microsoft have announced that you can now bring the capabilities of many of these apps directly into the meetings experience for everyone to interact with, making the time your team spends together more effective and collaborative before, during, and after your meetings. Quickly gather feedback in Teams meetings with polls - Polls are a great way to turn passive listeners into active participants. Forms' integration with Microsoft Teams now brings the power of polls to meetings, helping you conduct more engaging, informative, and productive meetings. Meeting presenters can prepare polls in advance and launch the polls during meetings that attendees can easily view and answer. The new Forms polls for meetings is currently rolling out and will reach you soon. You can get started by updating your Teams app and adding the Forms app to your meeting tabs.
Remove unwelcome background noise in Teams meetings - Earlier this year, Microsoft released the ability to minimise distracting background noise in videos on Microsoft Stream. They are now bringing this technology to Teams meetings. This real-time noise suppression will help remove unwelcome background noise during your meetings, making easier to hear speakers in loud and distracting environments. Noise suppression is rolling out to all users now.
Automate routine tasks without leaving Teams - Also new this month is the Power Automate app for Teams. The app provides a lightweight designer experience and a number of templates to help you quickly get started building workflows right within Teams. This new app makes it even quicker and easier to automate routine tasks within Teams. To get started, make sure you're running the latest version of Teams.
Easily build and deploy apps and intelligent chat bots in Teams - In September, Microsoft announced a new Power Apps and a new Power Virtual Agents app for Teams, running on a built-in low code data platform, now called Microsoft Dataverse for Teams - making it easy for creators to quickly build and deploy apps and bots for Teams - now those apps are generally available. Teams users can easily build applications and bots directly within Teams without needing to deal with connecting to storage, managing integration, or switching applications. Dataverse for Teams makes the back-end tech logistics of creating and deploying business process solutions in Teams easier than ever. Built-in security and governance features provide seamless control of access to apps, bots, and flows, as well as their underlying data.
New capabilities help make it easier to find notes while working across Microsoft 365, capture and share content, and pick up where you left off.
Easily reference your notes when working on a OneNote page - Last month, Microsoft announced the OneNote feed for Outlook on the web, which conveniently combines your notes across Sticky Notes, recent OneNote pages, and even Samsung Notes so you can easily reference them while composing you mail. This makes it easy to reference your notes when working on a OneNote page and capture any new thoughts you have by creating a Sticky Note in your feed without having to leave OneNote. The OneNote feed is available in OneNote, OneNote on the web, OneNote for Windows 10, Outlook on the web, and Outlook.com. To get started in OneNote, click the Open feed icon in the top right corner of the OneNote app window to display the feed pane.
Capture and share web content and more in Microsoft Edge - This month, Microsoft released two new features to help make you more productive and find information more easily. First, Web capture in Microsoft Edge lets you easily capture and mark up web content, and then save or share it - simply drag a box to select what you want to capture even if you need to scroll. Second, Microsoft have added news and information from your favourite content providers in a new "My Feed" section within the enterprise new tab page. This customisable feed sits alongside your Office 365 content and is deigned to keep you connected to information most relevant to your industry or your company.
Quickly pick up where you left off on recent files and more in OneDrive for iOS - A new home experience on the iOS mobile app for OneDrive will help you quickly pick up where you left off on recent files and easily re-discover memories from the past. Plus, you can now add a OneDrive widget to your iPhone home screen that displays your photo memories on this day across previous years. See your recent files and One This Day photos as soon as you open the OneDrive app. To get started, updated your OneDrive iOS app.
OneDrive family and group sharing now available - OneDrive has always made it easy to share docs, photos, videos, albums, and folders. But until now, sharing to a group of people meant typing in the names of all the people you wanted to share with. Last month, Microsoft simplified the process with one-click sharing to family and groups. Once you predefine your family or friend group, you'll be able to share a photo, album or important document to your group with one click. Family and group sharing are available in OneDrive for the web and included in all free and paid OneDrive consumer plans, as well in Microsoft 365 Personal and Family plans.
Hear Office documents read aloud to you on Android phones - As you move through your busy day, sometimes it's easier to hear your document read aloud to you. Now you can use Read Aloud to do exactly that in Word for Android phone and in Word on the Office app for Android. New voices offer a more natural and pleasant listening experience. You can easily pause and resume Read Aloud as well as adjust the voice speed. To get started, open the Word or Office app on your Android phone, go to the Review tab, then tap Read Aloud.
Get Yammer notifications in your Teams activity feed and more - This month, Microsoft are announcing several new and upcoming features in Yammer. Coming soon, notifications from your Yammer announcements and mentions will show up in your Microsoft Teams activity feed if you have the Communities app installed. Microsoft are also now rolling out an updated experience in the Yammer Tab for Teams that brings modern capabilities like pinning, cover photos, live events, and more. Finally, also released this month is support for Yammer Q&A insights in Microsoft Productivity Score, and interactive guide to get the most out of Yammer, and an updated experience for topics and hashtags in Yammer.

Protect sensitive information on your endpoints - In July, Microsoft announced the public preview of Microsoft Endpoint Data Loss Prevention (DLP) which extends your data protection capabilities to devices. Now generally available, Endpoint DLP enables organisations to enforce policies that identify and prevent risky or inappropriate sharing, transfer, or use of sensitive information consistently across cloud, on-premises, and endpoints. Microsoft are also adding new capabilities to a public preview based on feedback from customers - such as adding enforcement actions and locations-based sensitivity, a new dashboard in Microsoft 365 compliance center to manage DLP alerts, and more.
Sketch your Amazon Web Services (AWS) architecture in Visio for the web - Diagrams are a great way for cloud architects to visualise the degisn, deployment, and topology of IT solutions built on AWS. Microsoft have announced that they have added support to build AWS diagrams for various topologies and service interactions in Visio for the web. More than 400 shapes are available to help architects redesign existing infrastructure diagrams, conceptualise application architecture, or visualise the current state of your cloud environment and plan for the future. Recent innovations in SharePoint like home sites, multilingual support, and audience targeting allow customers to create award-winning intranets in Microsoft 365, with no code.
As more people use Teams as a hub for teamwork, users have asked to integrate the superpowers of SharePoint with Teams, to reach people effectively where they work.
Microsoft have announced the new home site app for Teams, which brings your home site and the best of your intelligent intranet to Teams. the app gives users a gateway to your organisation, starting with the app's name and icon, which you can customise to reflect the identity of your organisation or your intranet. The app's multi-level navigation lets people find sites across the organisation, including portals, teams, communities and applications.
Sites built on modern SharePoint will render inside Teams itself. And the app makes it easy to share and discuss content from intranet sites in Teams channels and chat.
With the home site app, people can tap into news and resources across the intelligent intranet without leaving the hub for teamwork. And communicators can build and deliver rich communications experiences in Teams.
Users have also requested a global navigation experience that connects the workplace. The new SharePoint app bar brings a consistent navigation experience to every site on your intelligent intranet, featuring quick access to important sites across the organisation, personally relevant sites, and the news feed. The customisable, global navigation in the app bar is shared with the home site app, giving employees that consistent navigation experience across Teams and the browser.
Communicators told us that it's harder than ever to get the right information to the right people, at the right time, across applications and devices. Today we announced improvements to news feeds and news digests.
The news feed delivers an intelligent view of news, targeted to you based on factors like your role or location, and further personalised based on signals in Microsoft Graph about where, how, and with whom you work. But communicators have told us that not all announcements and news are equal. Sometimes you need to boost the visibility of important news articles in the feed, rather then relying solely on AI. Soon, you can boost a news post until it has been read, for a set number of impressions, or until a given date. When the criteria is satisfied, the post returns to its normal position in the feed.
We're delivering an enhanced news feed that supports boosting news in Edge, in news web parts, and in the SharePoint start page. In the future, we'll be bringing this improved news feed to other experiences, and we'll be adding new superpowers to the feed.
And employees have told us that keeping up with so much news and information can be challenging. To help you keep up-to-date with workplace communications, the automatically generated news digest will send an email summary, curated by AI, of news articles you may have missed or not read that week. The digest will help ensure people stay on top of news that you have boosted. And you can customise the news digest with your organisation's branding.
For communities in Yammer, Microsoft recently empowered community managers to pin conversations to the top of the feed, and now you can feature a conversation, which showcases the conversation in the community feed and raises its visibility in Yammer's home feed. You can also post priority announcements, which raises the visibility of notifications in community members' inboxes. Additionally, leaders can delegate the ability to post to Yammer to their communications leads, allowing communicators to post news and announcements on behalf of leaders.
Communicators have also told us that to engage an audience that represents diverse generations and work styles, you need to reach people where they are. You can share news and announcements to people and engage them across your SharePoint intranet, and now, Teams and Yammer.
You can share a news article to a Teams channel or a Yammer community, to reach your audience and encourage conversation about the item. You can spark richer engagement with the superpowers of these apps. For example, when sharing a news article to Yammer, you can add a poll to measure sentiment, or share it as a question to crowd source ideas.
Users do not want to spend precious resources and brain cycles designing intranet sites. Last year Microsoft introduced the lookbook to help you build beautiful employee experiences.
Now you can use built-in templates to give any existing site an extreme makeover. Templates, like the leadership connection template, have been purpose built to support specific scenarios. They integrate the superpowers of SharePoint and other Microsoft 365 experiences, and deliver a beautiful, out-of-box design that you can customise with no code to reflect your branding and your needs. Of course, templates are responsive and accessible, so your experiences can be inclusive of all users, across devices.
Microsoft also recently announced that SharePoint spaces reaches general availability this fall. SharePoint spaces enable anyone to create immersive and engaging mixed reality experiences that showcase 3D content, models and 360° imagery, and bring 2D content to life in stunning new ways. Spaces transform scenarios from hosting virtual events to on-boarding employees, and can be experienced across devices, with a browser or a headset.

Innovations for Yammer's All Company community turn it into a powerful tool for informing and engaging the entire organisation, from the top-floor to the shop floor. Posts to the All Company community are discoverable by everyone, and anyone can engage. Now, you can customise the All Company community with your organisation's branding, and you can restrict who can post announcements or start new conversations in the community.
And when you share an announcement in Yammer's All Company community, notifications are generated for everyone in the organisation across Yammer, Outlook, and now Teams; across web, desktop and mobile. People can engage from the apps they use every day and express themselves with nuance using new reactions.
Finally, communicators have emphasised the importance of measuring the reach and effectiveness of communications. New insights include a heat map of interaction or dwell time on content. An analytics digest, powered by AI, will automatically be sent to the author of a news post one week after content is posted, and provides suggestions to increase visibility of their post. And in Yammer, updated Community Insights empower communicators and community manages with detailed analytics for Conversations, Live Events, and Question and Answers.
